Overview:
Some users may encounter persistent security warnings when using Microsoft 365 (M365) apps, such as Word, Excel, or Outlook. These warnings are typically triggered by third-party add-ins, with the PDF-XChange COM Add-in being a common culprit. Removing this add-in resolves the issue without affecting the core functionality of M365 applications.
Solution: Remove the PDF-XChange COM Add-in
Follow the steps below to remove the PDF-XChange COM Add-in and remove the security warnings.
1. Open the Affected M365 Application

Word, Excel, or PowerPoint, etc:
- Launch the specific Microsoft 365 app where you are experiencing the security warning.
2. Access the Options Menu
- In the top-left corner, click on File.
- From the sidebar, select Options.
3. Navigate to Add-ins
- In the Options window, select Add-ins from the menu on the left-hand side.
4. Manage COM Add-ins
- At the bottom of the window, locate the Manage dropdown.
- Make sure COM Add-ins is selected, and then click Go.
5. Remove PDF-XChange Add-in
- In the COM Add-ins window, look for an entry called PDF-XChange.
- Uncheck the box next to it to remove the add-in.
- Click OK to apply the changes.
6. Restart the Application
- Close and restart the affected Microsoft 365 app for the changes to take effect.
Additional Notes:
Removing the PDF-XChange COM Add-in should not affect your ability to open, view, or interact with PDF files in general. However, if you rely on specific functionality from this add-in, consider updating it or consulting with your IT team before removing it permanently.
